Background of the Study

Patient satisfaction is a critical indicator of healthcare quality, reflecting the degree to which patients’ expectations and experiences align with the care provided. In oncology care, patients’ experiences are heavily influenced by the interactions they have with healthcare providers, especially oncology nurses. Nurses’ educational background, training, and knowledge directly impact their ability to provide patient-centered care, which can improve patients' satisfaction levels.

Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DSUTH) provides oncology care for a substantial number of patients. The role of oncology nurses in ensuring patient satisfaction, particularly through their education and training, is crucial to improving patient outcomes. This study aims to evaluate how oncology nursing education impacts patient satisfaction in the oncology department of DSUTH.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of patient satisfaction, there is limited research on the direct link between oncology nursing education and patient satisfaction. It is unclear how the educational background and continued training of oncology nurses affect their ability to meet the emotional, psychological, and informational needs of patients. This study aims to fill this gap by assessing the impact of oncology nursing education on the overall patient experience at DSUTH.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the relationship between oncology nursing education and patient satisfaction at DSUTH.
  2. To explore the specific aspects of nursing education that contribute to patient satisfaction in oncology care.
  3. To assess whether higher levels of oncology nursing education lead to improved patient outcomes and satisfaction.

Research Questions

  1. How does oncology nursing education impact patient satisfaction at Delta State University Teaching Hospital?
  2. What aspects of oncology nursing education are most influential in improving patient satisfaction?
  3. To what extent does oncology nursing education influence the quality of patient care and communication?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Oncology nursing education positively affects patient satisfaction at Delta State University Teaching Hospital.
  2. Higher levels of education among oncology nurses result in higher patient satisfaction in the oncology department.
  3. The quality of patient care, communication, and emotional support in oncology nursing is significantly influenced by the education and training of the nurses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on oncology patients at Delta State University Teaching Hospital and will assess the relationship between the educational background of oncology nurses and patient satisfaction. Limitations include the subjective nature of patient satisfaction and the influence of factors outside nursing education on overall satisfaction.
